QUALIFICATIONS
Until recently, the recognised qualification for technical authorship was City and Guilds of London Institute Certificate of Technical Communication. City and Guilds announced the closure of this scheme last year, and the final exams will take place in 2007, although it is not possible to register for them now.
Due to this change, Tutortex Services will not be accepting any new enrolments after 1st January 2007. After this time, interested parties should contact the ISTC for advice on their own tutoring history courses.
ISTC
The Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators has now taken over responsibility for technical authorship qualifications, and issued their own syllabus last year. The first exams are expected to take place in 2008.
THE COURSE
The course provides comprehensive instruction in all stages of technical authorship. In addition, tuition is provided in the basics of written English. Ample practical exercises are provided to develop a good professional standard of straightforward technical writing.
The course is arranged in sections, each of which includes a series of exercises which the student completes and returns to the course tutor. The work is then marked and tutorial criticism and advice given. The marked exercises are then returned to the student together with the next section of the course. No set time is laid down for the completion of the exercises; students can work at their own pace depending the time available. You have two years from the date of enrolment to complete the course. If required, all the course material can be sent at the outset on request.
COURSE OUTLINE PART 1
There are forty units in Part One, providing a comprehensive introduction to the techniques od technical publication production. This includes the development of a lucid style of written English.
